Fuel Tech’s advanced TIFI® Targeted In-Furnace Injection™ technology offers an innovative solution to fireside treatment on boilers using coal, oil or biomass. The process is customized for each combustion unit, using two advanced fluid dynamics modeling techniques combined with a virtual reality engine. This integrated approach creates a detailed furnace model with injection overlays and dosage maps, enabling precise prediction of the chemical’s trajectory and ensuring near-complete coverage of the targeted zones. Targeting the problem areas of a furnace instead of treating the fuel, improves the performance and cost-effectiveness of programs.

The most common application of our TIFI technology involves using a diluted magnesium hydroxide slurry to treat identified problem areas within the combustion unit. This approach enables the chemical reagent to react with slag as it forms, and penetrates existing deposits, modifying the physical crystal structure in targeted regions. This is also a key factor in the technology’s exceptional sulfur trioxide abatement performance. The reagent, a specialized chemical slurry with micron-sized particles and a large surface area per unit volume, exhibits high reactivity, resulting in reduced treatment dosages. Additionally, its high stability minimizes handling and feeding challenges typically associated with unstabilized compounds.

Optimal performance is achieved with low dosage levels, which work by modifying the crystal structure of slag as it forms and adheres to tube surfaces. Nano-scale particles penetrate the slag, significantly reducing the strength of the finished crystals and allowing soot-blowing to remove the deposits with minimal effort.

TIFI programs are engineered to deliver effective slag control and fuel flexibility. This includes enabling the use of more cost-effective, higher-slagging coals such as Illinois Basin (ILB) coal. By employing a range of optimized reagents, the program maximizes boiler performance while also addressing corrosion challenges caused by high chlorine levels in ILB fuels.

Atomization is precisely controlled according to the results of the CFD model. Chemical feed rates are well below stoichiometric requirements, while ash fusion temperatures remain unaffected.
